What's great about it: Fits within ear instead of having to wear bulky headphones!
What's not so great: Nothing
Bose Acoustic noise canceling ear buds have an exceptional sound quality. A must for frequent air travelers or anyplace you experience a high noise level. I've purchased 4 sets in the last year or so as gifts. My family loves them.

motorcycle use and noise-cancellation performance

Basically, according to the reliable and independent review above, plus all the comments at the bottom, they do not seem to block wind noise at all and also engine noise well. Why did Bose not engineer them for motorcycle use?
They certainly eliminate engine noises while flying. Would it be safe for motorcyclist to totally block out all sound? Think this would be a safety hazard and it seems most bikes these days are built to be excessively noisy.

RE: noise cancellation quality when not listening to music

My main purpose for buying noise canceling headphones is not to listen to music without distractions, but to have peace and quiet while not listening to music. Peace. Quiet. No music, either. So, how well does the noise cancellation perform when not listening to any music? When not listening to music, will conversations be blocked out? Or, do they perform better with reducing noises like air conditioner units, subway sounds, but do not do well with blocking out human speech?
I use them without music at night to block out my husbands snoring. They really work and are much more comfortable than earplugs. Just be sure they're set to noise canceling.

Use while charging?

Would it do any harm to the battery or electronics to use them while charging?
