This web camera is small, very portable, and easy to setup. Picture quality is excellent and price is more than reasonable. There is no other major brand web camera that can auto-focus at this price point. You can place it on a laptop screen or desktop monitor or just plain on a coffee table. It has a wide-angle view. It is fast.
I would recommend this to a friend!

Is the Logitech - HD Webcam C615 - good as a security camera for use in a house... limitations?

No. Buy a surveillance camera like a Fujikam F001 or similar one for around $60 which has wireless capabilities and suitable software to use it for security purposes.
