I wear both the Apple watch - and when I can't - the Fitbit zip. It is easy to wear when I'm playing team volleyball - and helps me keep track of that activity level. So I see the device as an inexpensive addition to my main method of tracking activity levels.

does fitbit work without smart phone?

I know the fitibit counts steps, calories burned, etc.. but does it work without a smart phone?
Yes it tracks steps, calories, etc. separate from your phone. But your ability to then compare day to day stats and to keep the information beyond the day in which it is recorded - can't happen without the link to the app. So for example, I play team sports with the fitbit on my waist. Then later that day when the fitbit is close to my phone, it will transmit the info to the phone via bluetooth.

I have an older Mac (OS X v.10.5.8) with Bluetooth. Will the FitBit be compatible with my machine?

The fitbit app goes with different computers so it isn't an issue. In terms of charging, the product's battery life lasts a year, not necessitating a connection (other than bluetooth) to your Mac. I don't own a Mac but I use the fitbit app with Windows, iPad, and iPhone. (Look for the fitbit app for use with the Macs!)

Can you charge the battery with my computer?

I am skeptical to buy this if the battery life is short. I don't want to keep replacing batteries. Most tracking devices can be charged on a computer.
You are missing the point. The great thing about this product is that the battery lasts about a year. That is unlike the vast majority of activity trackers.
