After having owned a half dozen different detectors over the last 15 years or more including uniden, whistler, and beltronics. This is the best one so far it has already saved me from a couple of fixed camera locations that i did not see and I love the distance to camera countdown it gives you. Also really like the real speed display on the unit. The current pricing in my local store is better than the online price, so make sure you compare before laying down your money.

Can you wire this up without connecting it to lighter port and have it wired by car battery so the cord isn't hanging out?

Is there a difference between the blue and red displays, other than "color"?

I think the blue is kinder to your eyes, especially at night. Other than that, all the specs are the same
