My wife and I finally decided to drop DirecTV and start saving. We connected a Leaf antenna (to get free local channels) and a Roku 2 to each of our 2 TVs. The biggest loss is news and consistently good picture quality. The Rokus are fine, it's the indoor Leaf antenna's the are a little challenging. I will probably need to install a larger antenna in the attic this spring. Going back to the Rokus. They're great if you have a complementary service like Amazon Prime or Netflix. A lot of good on-demand content from PBS. Pretty much everything. As you progress through the Roku channels you may see some familiar cable channels and think you may have hit it big. Don't get too excited. It appears a good number of these are intended to work with your existing cable service. So if you're picking up a Roku to avoid cable service and you see a logo that is a must have, you may want to hold off cancelling the cable until you successfully setup the Roku channel without "pairing" it to your current service. When you get ready to starting adding channels to your Roku, I would suggest having your computer online and be ready to do a little bit of account setup for some channels. One feature I really like is how You Tube on my Android can pair with Roku. Once my Android was paired, it is just a tap on the screen to move the video to the big screen. Really nice.
I would recommend this to a friend!

What about "local" TV programming

Does this allow access to local tv stations? for news and weather etc.?
Roku is exclusively an Internet-based solution. If you want over-the-air free local channels, you will need to get a digital antenna. In theory, your local stations may broadcast both over-the-air and over-the-Internet at the same time but there is an additional hurdle. The local station would also need to have worked with Roku to create a Roku channel. Finally don't expect the local station to add all their content to the Roku channel. Typically, I find about 3 clips per news broadcast.
The national CBS and NBC news is a little better in that they do have a larger selection of video clips. FOX News is also available but again, the selection is limited.
International news seems to be fairly well covered by a couple other Roku channels.
Weather fairs a little better. Weather Nations does a really good job of covering the entire nation and still provides a good deal of detail on local weather.
