I'll get straight to the point: The sound is excellent, when it's making sound.
This device could be awesome, except for one "feature" (it's a bug, if you ask me): It constantly goes into "sleep mode". So there are periods of time when theres no signal to the subwoofer. Then, it wakes up with a big "thump". Why such a tiny, low power device even has a sleep mode is beyond me, but it makes it so much less useful because of it. In a nutshell, when I'm watching TV quietly, the wireless link goes in and out of sleep mode, and randomly (and rather loudly) thumps the subwoofer when it wakes up. It's incredibly annoying.
I'm not the only person to observe this. Unfortunately it's too late for me to return mine, otherwise I would. :-(
No, I would not recommend this to a friend.

My unit seems to have a very high threshold on the input signal before it will start transmitting. I ran a test tone from the receiver and had to crank the sub level and the volume to over half way on the receiver before it would transmit the signal.

Yep. This is this product's downfall. It has a "sleep mode" it stays in, and goes into when it shouldn't. Very, very annoying.

Can this product be used with a passive subwoofer?

No, it's line level. It'll require an active sub, or an amplifier to drive the passive speaker.
