I've been using using APC products for UPS and surge protection . this provides adequate power backup for a desktop computer and a couple peripherals. the last one lasted 4 years with the battery being fully functional. hope this lasts just as long.

How do you know when the battery needs replacing?

From time to time, i actually simulate a power outage. Pull the power cord from the wall. If the battery kicks on it should be good.
