does this phone really require a data plan?

I need a new phone but only want to use it for calls and text messaging, I can care less about the internet features, and is it possible to just bypass the data plan.
Not if you want the discounted contract price.

app invasion

how do i prevent the onslaught of unwelcomed stored apps that appear constantly runnimg down the battery on my S4...the apps killer works for a minute or two but within a minute they are back running again ...good grief
I rooted my phone and used a process freeze app to stop unwanted apps from running. This is not recommended unless you are comfortable modifying the phone. Rooting may void the warranty, and freezing the wrong apps may cause the phone to run poorly, or not at all. Again, be careful if you decide to go this route.

Plugging the charger SG 4 4G

Does the port to plug in the charger a cover or it is air open?.
No cover on standard S4. The AT&T S4 Active model does have port covers.

Does this phone automatically switch to a wi-fi connections when one is available?

There is an option to autoconnect to WiFi when in range. I personally set mine to connect to home WiFi automatically, but no others. Also can be set to only do updates over WiFi, as well as switch to available WiFi when using high data apps.
