I had problems with packet collisions on both the gigabit Ethernet and Wi-Fi of this model and had to return it. I first noticed problems when recording TV from my HDHomerun tuners connected to my LAN. I then tried transferring some video files to my server and noticed it was taking way to long. I ended up returning it and went back to using my separate cable modem and Wi-Fi router. As far as Wi-Fi in general you want to place the router as close to the center of the house and as high as possible. Make sure there are no metal objects near it that will block the signal. You are also better off using a separate Wi-Fi router versus an all-in-one cable modem/ Wi-Fi router because the all-in-one's tend to have shorter range and are less configurable.

You probably want to get a cable modem with DOCSIS 3 for increased speed but an older model with DOCSIS 2 is fast enough to stream video. Don't buy a cable modem that has Wi-Fi built in. Every one of the all-in-one routers I have tried has had limited range and limit configuration settings compared to a dedicated wireless router.
