I use this to get computers online when the internal NIC is not working. Works pretty well on XP, 7, 8, and 8.1 plus my Microsoft Surface.

Is this suitable to hook a USB printer to a wired network?

Need to share a printer between many computers without needing to leave a specific on running.
No, I don't believe a printer would be able to use this device. The printer wouldn't have the drivers for it. You would need a USB Print Server to do what you want to do.
