Wifi problems

I've been reading several reviews regaring problems with wifi. Is this truly a problem with the computer itself? Or could this be a problem with the users home/office/other internet connection? If it is a problem with the computer itself, has the issue been resolved? Or is Sony planning to resolve the issue? This is the main reason I have yet to go to the store and buy it.
I bought one after seeing the superb screen. Wifi is unuseable unless you are 5 feet from your router. Broadcom driver is dated 3/8/13 ver 6.3.59.132. WIndows 8 rstates this driver is up to date. I don't even want to attempt to convince SONY they need to get their act together. Speaking with my wallet and RETURNED it. Bought a HP
