Needed some extra handsets for a new VOIP line, these phones use a regular phone cable that plugs directly into the VOIP box which then plugs into the internet. in fact bought 2 sets as I have 2 lines working at the same time. if you need for the regular phone lines they work just as well, easy to set up and use.
I would recommend this to a friend!

I have voice mail with my phone service.
Yes it can be turned off as I also have voice mail service provided by my phone service

Do all phones have to be connected to a phone jack, or just the base?
Only the main unit needs to be connected to a phone jack, and also a power socket.

Do batteries go dead in handset with no notice?
How many hours will the handset batteries last in live "talk-time" conversations (I see some new phones advertising 6-8 hours) before needing to be recharged; and how long will a handset last on standby (at the bedside but not being used, talked on, receiving calls, or any other activities) before having to go back into the base for recharging. Some of the new phones are advertising 8-11 DAYS!
But I must say, this is a very very good deal!

I never intentionally tested its life of the battery off the base, but having made a few calls and received some most days they have lasted easily over 3 days. If the phone is not being use or not receiving any calls I could see it lasting easily twice the amount of time.
As for a busy day talking on the phone for say 3+ hours, for which I have had a couple of days like that the phone has lasted left off the base until the next day.
I would question why 8-11 days for a phone to be left off base without ringing, I cant see how anyone would not use or expect one call in that period unless they are on vacation so that test results seems pointless. Even if you go on vacation and leave the phone off base for 2 weeks the main phone will still work as that will be plugged into the power socket and will be taking voice messages.
