When my battle axe space heater finally quit, it was time for me to bite the bullet and purchase a new one. I scanned Best Buy and other sites for something relatively inexpensive but something that would heat my computer room in my basement and the secondary bedroom. Both can get quite chilly on cold days when we don't want to over heat the entire house.
When I came across the Honeywell Heat Genius, I chuckled at the marketing. It was at the top of my monetary threshold.
The battle axe had fewer settings but at the same time had too many. It was only useful when the resistance wires were turned on at full blast.
I discovered elsewhere ceramic heaters could be self-regulating and they wouldn't get red-hot to work, thereby making them safer. I decided to give Honeywell a try.
Giving the bottom line first, it heated both spaces very well. It is quieter than the battle axe ever was. It is lighter, too. And, lo and behold, the various settings were useful and easily intuitive.
One of the settings offers the ability for the upper and lower elements to be on simultaneously or separately. I use the lower element only when the tile floor is cold but the room is not so bad. I use the upper element only for the bedroom on similar conditions.
One can also set the heater independently on high or low, or set the heater to a temperature setting. The latter may not be so useful if heating a limited area of a larger room, but it is useful for my purposes.
Another setting is the countdown feature. One can set the heater to turn off to as much as two hours later in 30 minute increments. I used it once set to one hour when going to sleep. It did its job.
The final setting is one I tested to see if it works -- it did work -- but I haven't really used it yet. That setting is the quiet setting. From what I can tell, it means the heater is on and radiates the area without the fan actually being on as well. The heater is fairly quiet already which is why I haven't actually used this setting in practice yet. It is still-of-the-night quiet in this setting, so I can see I might use this setting if on a conference call while teleworking.
There are less expensive heaters but they mostly newer versions of my battle axe. The more expensive heaters seem to be more robust and may be worth the money if a real large area (like my entire basement or living room) needs to heated solely with a portable unit. This heater suits my needs perfectly.
I would recommend this to a friend!

I initially bought a Logitech M570 for my work laptop on days I teleworked. I hated the way I was supposed to move my cursor. Plus, depending on where at home I teleworked, using my mouse wasn't always ideal either. I decided I would give trackball a try.
I liked it so much, I bought two more -- one for my Apple at home and one for my Dell at work. There are three things of note I would like to add.
First, I was concerned with developing carpal tunnel syndrome. Since leaving the mouse, the early symptoms have subsided.
Second, when I have two M570s next to each other -- one for my home computer and one for my teleworking laptop -- the M570 dedicated to one computer doesn't affect the other computer if they're both on and active.
Third, I am pleasantly surprised of the longevity of the included battery. I pay extra for the longest life batteries in items I use repeatedly. Most items that include batteries usually are good enough to get one started but go kaput in short order.
The learning curve is a short one. I now prefer it to a mouse.

Californication: The Sixth Season [2 Discs]
Californication: The Sixth Season [2 Discs]
Season 6 of the cable dramedy that chronicles the carnal escapades of New York City novelist Hank Moody (David Duchovny) opens with Hank still reeling from the murder attempt on his life. He accompanies Charlie (Evan Handler) to a meeting with rock star Atticus Fetch (Tim Minchin), who wants to mount a Broadway musical based on Hank's novel "Crazy Little Thing Called Love." In his new friend, the enchanting Faith (Maggie Grace), Hank may have found a muse, which is a role she has apparently played for a number of rock stars. And when the reviews roll in for the first draft of the musical, he turns to Faith for inspiration and help getting it to the next level.

Hey, if you're considering the purchase of Season Six, I am sure (at least I hope) you have seen the first five seasons, and you liked the first five seasons. I got hooked early on when Showtime had a free preview. I didn't get a Showtime subscription but I did purchase Season One.
Well, this is Season Six. That should pretty much explain it all.
I would not suggest getting Season Six as a standalone purchase. You could watch it but I think this is a case where watching the series in order helps--kind of like The X-Files in that way, but this ain't no X-Files.
The series is an acquired taste. I love it. My wife: meh, not so much. Our taste in music differs, too, so c'est la vie. I like Warren Zevon.

Noise canceling great on plane and train

This is actually my second QC-20i. The first one I got for myself. Within a few weeks, I purchased one for my wife for our return cross-country trip.
My daily commute consists of two, sometimes three, modes of public transportation--commuter train, subway, and sometime light rail. These do a fantastic job of canceling most ambient noise which allows me to listen to the music comfortably. The sound quality seems better than my high-end ear buds I had been using but I think some of that is because there is no competing with other sounds.
I wanted to get an over-the-ear model. The Bose model outperformed others in the noise canceling department but I got spooked with reviews on how the Bose model eats through batteries. This in-ear model recharges quickly and holds a charge many, many hours even in "quiet mode."
What I was surprised about--and in a good way--was how good it was in the "aware mode." Unlike my ear buds (or with these simply turned off), I can here surrounding noise in the background pretty darn well. I found this useful when walking the streets of DC, when I wanted to hear what was delaying the train this time, or if I wanted to hear the ocean in the background at the beach. Very clever design.
I was also relieved these are quite comfortable. They come with three sizes. I needed the large; my wife the small. With the high-end ear buds, two or three hours was my limit. On the entire trip to LA, I never took them out except to be polite to the stewardess--which was unnecessary on "pause" and in the "aware mode."
The only area where I would nick these on rating is when I'm using them with my iPhone 4. The controls work fine and I get the same positive results as with my iPod and iPad. However, my wife had some difficulty hearing me when I was talking to her on the way home from a commute. She has not experienced this problem, however. I don't know if it is because she has an iPhone 5 or if it is because I was talking from an area with high level background noise. My guess is the latter, so I couldn't nick it a full star. Maybe I would give it a 9.5 out of 10 if that were the scale.
On the trip to LA, I was blissfully watching DirecTV almost completely unaware there was the proverbial baby crying. When I tuned back into reality for landing, the first words my wife said was, "I can't wait to get off this plane and away from all that crying." My wife usually oohs and ahhs over everything less than two years old so it must have been bad. I was aware a little bit because people were taking turns walking up and down the aisle to calm the child down. That's when I knew what to buy for my wife for her birthday. No in-flight TV for the return trip but we were both lost in our music. (And, yes, there was another baby.)
Best Buy doesn't sell this but Bose makes a wall jack for charging (comes with the cord to charge through your computer) and an airline jack. It might be worth going to Bose for one or both if it suits your style.

Do you have this model "wired" by USB? I'm old school. Thank you.

A tiny plug-in module is included. You plug that into your computer at a USB port. The trackball is connected to your computer through this plug-in. It is not literally wired, however. Being wireless made me want it more and now liking it more. If you have two or more close by, the trackball only communicates to the computer it is associated with the plug-in.
