My son needed this because he plays a lot of Call of Duty games. He most recently the game Titan Fall and we could not play the game without it. Best thing is he can remove it and take it with him to his friends house.

is this the same thing as a hard drive or can it be used as the same thing?

Yes this is a had drive. Its for the x box 360. Its an internal hard drive, so make sure your x box doesn't need the external. I think the internal came out two years ago, so if the x box is older than that chances are this will not work for you.
