Will this device work from a smart phone's hotspot or only from a router?

Purchased a Samsung smart TV, but it won't connect to the internet from a smart phone hotspot, only a router. Will Roku work?
My cable guy said you needed a router and Internet service. Don't think a hotspot would work.

can one use only the Roku plus the TV (no phone, no DVD, etc.?

I don't believe you need to have a phone or DVD player just a wireless router and Internet service.

Will this work if you don't subscribe to cable TV?

I purchased an LED (1080 by LG) for my mom but she doesn't subscribe to cable TV and I can't figure out how to get her local channels to come through on this new TV. Do I need to purchase an HDMI cable AND this box? Will having both of them fix the problem?!
I believe you just need a wireless router and Internet to watch Roku. My cable installer said Rokustreaming had nothing to do with my cable TV.

Is there a subscription fee to watch the "1,500 entertainment channels" advertised in the Product Features section?

.....and what are some of those "entertainment channels?" CBS, NBC, etc; or something else?
Most of the channels are free but some of them charge a monthly fee usually $1.99 or so and some charge by the show. The most expensive channels I have seen are Netflix and Hulu at $7.99 each and a couple of others for $4.99.
