Bought this for a west coast to east coast road trip. I would have had to spend $200 more to get significantly better coverage. Did not have many issues with false positives.

No reason to look anywhere else. I have a number of these and I don't get errors once they get old and thrown around in my computer bag or desk drawer.
I would recommend this to a friend!

Will this camera except the old cannon 35mm lens?

Yes you can. I am using my 24-85 and my 75-300 zoom from my old EOS IX 35 mm body. However you do miss out on the features (mostly electronics) of a more modern lens, so I have the current Canon - EF 50mm f/1.8 STM Standard Lens on my near term purchase list.
