I needed to back up 3 computers, one of which contains a lot of photographs from a 26 megapixel DSLR and many HD video files. This drive has more than enough space for all of these.
I knew this when I bought it, but this unit must be plugged into the wall. Because I need to move it from computer to computer, If I had to do it again, I think I would spend a little more and get one that does not need AC power, even it was not a large.
I would recommend this to a friend!

Is this a desktop drive or a portable drive?

Desktop. It must be plugged into a wall outlet. However, I move mine around to 3 different computers for monthly backup. Some hassle, but it works.
