I needed a full-time rear-facing camera for my travel trailer. I mounted the BC 30 inside the trailer looking through the rear window, The transmitter, I simply stuck to the wall, facing forward. i hardwired the BC30 to a 12 volt source which makes the camera live anytime the trailer clearance lights are on. (Always have the lights on when driving.) I integrated the camera with an older but compatible Garmin GPS. I am impressed that the video penetrates the fiberglass walls of my trailer, the fiberglass shell on my truck and reaches the GPS receiver mounted on the windshield. Now I can see obstacles as I back in, traffic behind the trailer and especially not-so-smart tailgaters......Solid installation.
I would recommend this to a friend!

I was thinking about getting one of the XM radio devices for my husband for Christmas. He drives a 76 Chevy and only has the old school dials. Would he be able to use this device with his old truck???

The truck's radio must have an FM mode to provide an otherwise unused "channel" to receive the XM signal. An 'AM only' radio will not provide the proper interface. That '76 Chevy is probably worth the purchase of one of the integrated AM/FM/XM/CD units. Try one that does not require "in-dash" installation to preserve the original truck radio. By the way, most AM radios will be overwhelmed by Radio Frequency interference (i.e., static} in the presence of the signal produced by an XM Radio converter. If you plan to used the AM radio, make sure that the FM converter can be switched off when the XM radio is off. Good luck.

Since this camera will be exposed to the elements (Wisconsin), would the extended warranty be advised? Has anyone had any issues?

Boise, I see no reason to mount the unit or the transmitter outside....See my previous answer.......I mounted the BC30 and its transmitter inside. The camera lens is against a rear window and the transmitter is facing the GPS. If the purpose is to see objects right at your bumper level, this configuration may not work however.

I have installed the garmin backup camera on the back of my trailer and it works great for what it is designed for, however I really need a camera with a much lower viewing angle so I can use it to view the traffic behind my trailer while driving. help?

Larry, See my previous answer re your application. My installation mounts the camera inside, on a rear-facing window sill. The camera and transmitter are inside, away from harsh conditions. I mounted it at about 4 feet from ground level but pointed it down to sweep the road behind my trailer. I have it set to see rear-approaching vehicles at about 200 feet and close as 3 feet....Good luck.

can i shorten the power cable that comes with the bc30. It appears to be a special shielded cable. i did this but dont get a backup camera icon under settings on drivesmart 51lmt-s

iacbar, I would not modify the coaxial cable unless you have the right tools and expertise. The 12 volt power cable is a separate leg of the cable assembly and length should not be critical. Remember that using the BC 30 requires a special interface cable for particular Garmin models....

Hi, can a BC 30 wireless backup camera be used on a Ford F 150 pickup? If so where do you mount the transmitter since the fuse holder is not waterproof and the connector between the camera and the transmitter is not waterproof? What is the length of the c

Kent, I had no problem mounting the camera and transmitter inside....Keep the transmitter facing the GPS receiver for the most effective range. My installation works 100% with no dropout at about 45 feet, through the walls of my travel trailer, reaching the receiver inside the truck....I keep it on all the time, not just when backing up. That requires a 12 volt source which is hot when the camera is needed. Don't use a source which cannot be turned off since that would eventually drain your battery. Good luck.
