The Jawbone Up is often confused for newer products with wireless communication abilities, which leads to some hurt feelings when unboxing this tracker. I bought it knowing that it would need to plug in to my phone to upload its data and was fine with it- I use it mostly for sleep tracking and it has served its purpose well. The times that I have worn it doing physical activity (military training, obstacle courses, general outdoors fun) it hasn't fared very well. It has worked fine for things like running and walking though.
As long as you're not looking for something that instantly uploads or that will stick with you through a tough mudder, this is a solid tracker that comes down in price fairly regularly.
I would recommend this to a friend!

how does it track info?

i was wondering how this device tracks cal's burned during a workout or cal's ingested during a meal

The app itself is what lets you track things like meals, or calories burned. The band will track periods of physical activity like steps, or duration when you set it to time something. You'd use the app to classify it later. It does work with a bunch of other (more intuitive apps IMO) for easier meal tracking and workouts.

Is the Jawbone compatible with androids?

Yes, you have to use the android app with it. Requires 4.0 and up, and will take up your audio jack.

How do I know what size to order?

You'll really want to go somewhere to try it on. Mine and my wife's ran fairly small (based on our expectations.) They do have a fairly accurate printable sizer though https://jawbone.com/pdfs/products/up/sizing.pdf
