What's great about it: Easy to store large amounts of data
What's not so great: Cost
I have used many of these with my satellite DVR. The USB2 connection makes it very easy to swap drives and the speed is sufficient for all uses with the DVR (transfer and playback). Drive must be reformatted for the DVR's format but the DVR does this automatically when the drive is first connected.

What's great about it: Plug and play, good transfer speed
What's not so great: Cost
I have used many of these to expand my PC storage and to provide backup and archive capability. Very quick and easy to install and it configures and maps the drive automatically with Windows 7. Very quick way to transfer large amounts of data between PCs. Convenient means of doing backups.

Does this unit have to be plugged in at all times?

No. You can freely disconnect and reconnect these drives. I have many of these drives and I frequently disconnect one drive and then switch to another drive in my library of multimedia files and data backups.. Windows 7 handles this automatically and it only takes a short time for Windows to remap and rescan the drives.
