I thought this shelf was taller but nope it's sooo tiny. Really tiny. I can only arrange it to put 4 rows of dvds/blu-rays with two extra shelves left. I was going to return it but I'm lazy to disassemble it. It'll do for now. Wished I never bought it. Expensive and small.
No, I would not recommend this to a friend.

Can extra shelves with extra supports be obtained at time of purchase?

I don't think so. You can put 4 rows of dvds with two extra shelves with nowhere to go.

Does it have holes in back for wires to tv ,boxes etc...

Nope. But the back piece is thin enough if you want to make holes.
