I've been using this for over a month now in a medium sized apartment with very solid walls my standard Comcast router failed to penetrate well. I get up to 70mbps on both N5g and 5. This is in comparison to the 100 mbps I get if plugged into the modem directly via Ethernet, and these test speeds represent 1 device on the Wifi at the time of the test. However, I have found that speeds are still very good with 5-6 devices connected. 2 laptops, 2 tablets, a cell phone or 2. If you don't have a need for AC, I recommend this router for the price.

will this router work with my laptop using verizon dsl

Yes, but your connection speed will be limited to the speed of your DSL.
