I tend to transfer a lot of data to these drives to deliver data to customers. The transfer speed is a little slower than on previous models, but still satisfactory. You don't get enterprise speed on a USB powered drive.

This is my first Windows tablet. I hate Win8 and can't wait for Win10 to come out. The battery is a disappointment, but I use it a lot. Spring for the Pro model to get a bigger display and a faster processor. It's worth it.

The size is nice, but the transfer speed on this drive is slow relative to 3.5 inch drives, even though they spin at the same speed.

I move large volumes of data to disk for delivery to customers so as the price per GB on newer, larger drives decrease, I step up to the higher capacities. This is my first purchase of the Seagate 5TB external drives and they are noticeably slower for my purposes, but for the average home user looking to store video, music, or pics, you most likely won't notice.
I would recommend this to a friend!

Most 2.5" USB 3.0 external drives are pretty slow to transfer data, so I was pleasantly surprised with the speed of this drive. It's still not anywhere near as quick as an internal drive, so choose your method of use wisely.

extra storage

Can this be used as an extra storage drive instead of using it as a backup drive?
Yes. The difference between the two is a function of you writing data to it on your own vs. a schedule function of a program, but either way the way the operating system views the device doesn't change.

will the seagate 5tb external hard drive operate in all "positions", i.e laying flat, vertical, etc.

_ - horizontal, YES
| - vertical, YES to on its side and far end. The near end takes the USB and power cable, so there is no way to stand on this end.
/ - diagonal, NO, it's not recommended for the drive.

Try not to move the drive while in use.

Will this product work wirelessly for backing up from PC or MAC?

It depends. There is no wireless feature built into this product, but the drive can be plugged into a wireless NAS as an expansion drive.

Can you stack the units on top of each other (horizontally) if you have more than one?

Is the surface flat (can't tell from photo)?
Any issues with over heating / ventilation if you stack?
Yes. Depending on how hard you are using the drives you may not want to do this due to the heat output.

Is this drive 5400rpm or 7200rpm?

Is this drive 5400rpm or 7200rpm?
I believe 5700 RPM, but it may be 5400. I may be confusing my 6TB and my 5TB.

Will this work with different Windows programs?

I have a computer with Windows 98, one with XP, one with Vista and one with Windows 8 that I want to back up and clean off photos and videos. Will this work across all of those Windows programs?
It will not work with WIn 98, it will work with XP with Service Pack 3, and it will work with the others.

Not without getting crafty and potentially voiding your warranty.

do i have to format for a mac
For default uses with the Mac OS it can only be read by the Mac without reformatting it. Yes, it can be used by Yosemite, and Yes, you will have to format it. Seagate makes a Mac version of this drive, but it isn't worth paying more to avoid having to reformat the drive. It's a steep convenience fee.

Use as a storage device for TV?

Can I leave this plugged in to my tv (while connected to Wifi) send data like movies from my laptop to this Hd drive?
Most TVs don't support this option, but go to your manufacturers website and download the manual for your TV and check the capabilities of the USB port on your TV. Most are read-only, meaning they will show items from the drive on your TV, but they don't support writing things to the drive from the TV.

Why wouldn't you just plug this drive into your laptop's USB port?

Windows & Chrome Compatability???

I was told by the Best Buy salesman that this drive would be compatible with both Windows and Chrome. I saved my photos from my Toshiba laptop (Windows) onto the Passport drive, but when I plug it into my Chromebook, it says I cannot open the files because they're Windows format. Any suggestions? Any idea what App I would need on my Chromebook to open the Windows file?
The drive is compatible with both operating systems, but your picture format is not. I can't give you specifics since I don't know the format of the pictures you are trying to view, but there are plenty of conversion tools out there on www.download.com. Make sure you tick the "Free" box so you don't get stuck paying for something when there are free alternatives.
