how many pictures and video can be stored
Really depends on the size of the pictures/video you have. The higher the quality of the pictures/video the bigger the files will be.

Yes it should be compatible with any computer with USB ports and a compatible operating system.

Is this SanDisk Cruzer 8GB USB 2.0 backward compatible with USB 1.1?
Yes, USB 2.0 drives are backwards compatible with USB 1.1 . The drive will just read/write at USB 1 speeds.

I know 0 about USB drives. Am assuming this 32GB will hold all my pictures and files (no videos). When do I know the files are all transferred?
It really depends on the operating system of the computer you are using, but most are pretty similar. In windows you would see your flash drive as a drive after plugging it in, and then you can copy/paste or drag/drop files onto the drive. There will then be a dialog box that comes up that shows progress of the transfer, that will disappear once the transfer is complete. On OS X the drive will show up in your finder and the process for copying files is the same as windows.
32GB should hold quite a bit of pictures. You could put any files including video's though videos will take up a lot more space obviously.
