What's great about it: Easy to operate, clean lines, Mom loves it
What's not so great: No extra bells and whistles
What some people criticize in this microwave, I love: Interior light doesn't stay on after you open the door. That's GREAT in my opinion. Because you don't have to close the door (and trap in moisture that will rust out the interior) just to shut off the light. Who wants to use a microwave to light the kitchen? Not me.
Also, when cooking stops, you get 3 noticeable beeps -- not an endless supply. What a relief.
The add-30-second button can be pushed repeatedly to do many jobs without ever using another button. I wouldn't mind having an add-1-minute button too, but let's not get greedy.

Can the audible signal be turned off? If so, how?

I always need to turn off the signal beep and want to know if that can be done on this model (R-309YW). Thanks.
Don't know if you can completely turn it off but it only beens 3 times when cooking ends and then stops all by itself. Unlike many microwaves that are noisier than a parrot in a pet shop.
