The USB 3 connection is fast and data transfers are reliable.

Can this product be connected to a router to give me a centralized storage location available via WiFi?

If your router has USB 2 or USB 3 connections for an external drives, then yes, it can be attached and shared.
Most higher end routers support attaching drives directly to them so they can be shared.
