does this work with a Directv HDDVR

how to determine if only certain external hard drives can work with directv receivers. Is 2 tb the max?
I use it with Dish Network, I would call Direct and ask or check web page. With Dish you can only use it with the receivers on the same account (can't take it to a friends and use it with their dish receiver).
