FitBit is a wonderful motivator. It is also fun to be in a community of users, friends and to track yourself against others. HOWEVER, the quality of these devices has been decreasing. FitBit only gaurantees them for 45 days and this is the third device I have had to buy (i.e., replace). Don't even think about reaching anyone at FitBit to address an issue. They are not staffing up to support the large number of users/units sold. So, buy one, enjoy using it when it works, and keep an eye out for a more reliable product as this self-monitoring space continues to expand.

does it measure stair climbing?

is stair climbing measured by fitbit zip?
This unit records stairs as steps. It does not distinguish between a walk inside your home, walking on a treadmill or climbing stairs. I believe the more expensive units do distinguish the difference. These units are only guaranteed by FitBit for 45 days. Buy the insurance @ Best Buy. I have replaced two of these units in the last year...so buy it, enjoy it, enjoy the community you can join with it, but reliability has become an issue with this product.

Does it work when I use a treadmill - I have heard that it does not?

Yes, absolutely. I have had reliability problems with these units so make sure you buy insurance. FitBit only guarantees these for 45 days! When they work they pick-up ever step reliably...
