Pretty good headset. The sound is very crisp, though it seems easily susceptible to interference; a slight crakling sound can be heard. However, my house is full of wireless gadgetry, so that's maybe the cause.
The only real problems are the weight - though, this is probably not something that can be got around - and the plastic casing seems to ionize one's hair readily. However, my girlfriend discovered that, if you put a cloth between the strap and your hair, the static effect is mitigated substantially.
I would recommend this to a friend!

headphones work for 3-5 minutes and then go dead

I have fully charged the headphones overnight several times with the headphone power switch turned to off position, properly positioned on charging rack, and rack's green power light is on. I turn on the headset power, light turns green, and the headset goes dead in 3-5 minutes of use (headset power light is still green - still charged?). If I disconnect and then reconnect the charging unit plug into the headphone output on the TV ... headphones work again but go dead again in 3-5 minutes. What is going wrong? Regular corded headphone works great all the time, so don't think it is in the TV headphone jack.
Ensure that the headphone's power light comes on when placing it on the charger. The indicator is a red LED mounted on top of one of the headphones. If that doesn't light up, the headphones are not mounter properly and will not charge.

Is the transmitter required or can you run a wire from audio source directly to the headphone?

Thinking about getting these for my son. He plans to use them on his home computer. But he'd also like to take them on long athletic team bus trips where he won't be able to carry or plug in the transmitter. Wondering if they have an option to be also used as a wired set, or if he'd need a separate set of headphones for that?
He can't carry the transmitter with him on bus trips and would like to plug headphones directly into his kindle or iPod.
I would suggest that your son get a substantially cheaper set of earbuds. They are virtually weightless and specifically designed for the application you speak of.
