The chromecast is so easy to set up and easy to use. Even for people who aren't tech savvy like my parents . They enjoy casting youtube videos and Netflix. Anybody can use it!
I would recommend this to a friend!

Why Chromecast if most streaming services are supported by my TiVo and DVD player?

Between my aging TiVo Premier and Panasonic DVD player, I have built-in apps to stream Netflix, Hulu, Vudu, YouTube, Cinema Now, Amazon Instant Video, and others.

Why would I otherwise use Chromecast other than directly displaying occasional live content from a PC or Android device?

Just checking to see if I'm missing something in my understanding! Thanks.
I have a smart tv that has Netflix, Hulu and YouTube but I still prefer using my phone to open these apps and casting it to my tv with chromecast because 1. The apps on the phone have better rewind/forward functions than the ones installed on my tv and 2. I use my tv sometimes just to play music from YouTube so I can control that from anywhere in my home using the app on my phone. I don't know if this helps, but that's why I prefer using my chromecast over my built in apps on my tv.
