I purchased this unit as a backup for a 1 TB WD that I had purchased a couple of year ago. I filled that one and needed more storage. Easy to use.

Can this provide auxiliary storage for a DirecTV DVR, using a SATA cable?

DirecTV DVR's have SATA ports that enable external drives to be connected. The DVR will format the drive, and the hard drive inside the DVR will be inaccessible while the external drive is connected. Does this drive have an SATA port, and does it come with an SATA cable?
Doubtful. You need to be able to access the drive from a pc, plus your storage is limited to your plan with directv.
