Very stable, even with the stock Asus firmware, with excellent range and speed. Very easy to set up; can be set up literally in minutes. A worthy successor to the disastrous RT-AC87U. The speed and range of the RT-AC87U are retained in the AC3100, without the instability, dropped connections and other problems that haunted the AC87U. This is not a so-called "smart" router, but a feature rich, very reliable two band router with QOS, traffic analysis and apps for printing, the cloud, USB connections etc. In my view, one of the best routers developed by any manufacturer since the Netgear R7000 and Asus RT-AC68P.

This router continues Asus' development of reliable routers with excellent range and speed. The GUI allows for simple set up and permits a high level of customization for applications having that need. Given the problems that the new SmartConnect technology has experienced, the Asus AC87 is a good alternative for those who want a reliable router with good speed and range, yet do not want to deal with the reliability and connection issues presented by the Smart Connect routers. It also has the further advantage that it is MU-MIMO ready and will have the better reliability of this technology once electronics makers start marketing clients that are MU-MIMO capable. As a closing comment, I would add that I use the Merlin customized firmware with this router and do not use the stock Asus firmware so my excellent experience with this router may differ from those who use the stock Asus firmware.

Is this Asus router the same with RT-AC88U (8 LAN ports) ?

Is this Asus router the same with RT-AC88U (8 LAN ports) ?
From what I have read in the trade press, they are identical, except the RT-AC88U has an 8 port, rather than a 4 port, switch.

which routers are compatible with att uverse high speed internet?

Most manufacturer's routers will work with Att Universe. Products from Asus, Netgear, Linksys, D-Link, TP, are just a few well known examples.

Router

Will a new router (and which one) extend coverage to my shop across the street from my house?
Probably not, particularly if you intend to stream video or are into gaming. The quality of your connection declines with distance, and the practical range of your router will generally be short of manufacturer's claims.

I need a high speed Wi-Fi router that can support 2 cell phones, two tablets, and a labtop all at the same time for under $200. Help me please?

The RT-AC3100 exceeds your $200 price ceiling.

Is the dsl modem built in on ASUS RT-AC88U router

I'm on Centurylink DSL. I need a router with much more range than my Netgear. I'm considering an ASUS RT-AC88U. But I can't find any information if the modem is included for DSL like my Netgear.
You need a separate modem to use with this router.

when being used as a media server will the second AC-2400 still act as a range extender?

Hello,

I'm contemplating getting a second one to use as a media server to consolodate the music and digital movies i've bought over the years so i can watch them throughout the house. But there are some points on one side of the house where the signal gets weak and unreliable weather i'm using the 2.4 or the 5ghz frequency so i was wondering if having the 2nd AC-2400 in media server mode would still allow it to act as a range extender or if it would have to remain close to to first router to act as the media server.
The AC2400 features, in adition to its standard wireless router mode, access point and bridge (extender) modes. With the bridge mode, approximately half of your speed is lost (this is not unique to the AC2400), so I would recommend the acess point mode if you can find some way to connect your second AC2400 via ethernet cable, such as by using powerline AV devices or an ethernet cable itself. I personally have experienced similar dead zone issues and have employed powerline AV units to connect other routers, including an AC2400, configured as access points to my main AC2400 router. It is not a perfect solution, but addresses the problem without spending a fortune either on snaking ethernet cable throughout your house or installing enterprise grade equipment with wireless mesh capability.

Does the Asus RT-AC87U AC2400 need a modem?

Yes. It provides routing and wireless functions only and must be used with a modem.
