Scanning/copying: Must the lid be closed?

I understand that the lid is not hinged in a way that permits it to be closed over thick items, such as books. Does the lid actually NEED to be closed when copying or scanning? That is, will these functions still work with the lid open?
I have always been told that it could damage your printer by leaving lid up.
