My Mom is hearing impaired thus making a cell phone nearly impossible for her to use. I bought this as a backup phone to an Internet dependent captioned phone. The speaker phone button makes this phone ideal for her to hear the caller. Very easy setup, also.

how do i adjust the amount of rings before answering service picks up?

It has a speaker phone function button. So yes, it can be used as a speaker phone.
