What's great about it: Works
What's not so great: nothing
If you have a modem, a router, a computer, and a monitor that you dont want damaged do to power surges or power outages then you need to own one of these. In fact power surges and power outages are one of the biggest causes of tech getting damaged over time (ie: router failure).

What's great about it: browsing the web was fast
What's not so great: Hard to setup, Tech support didn't speak english
I purchased this product because of the great review it had on tv-shopping network. I didn't buy it from the tv because I hate to wait and god forbid something is wrong with the product.
When I got it home setting up the router was fairly easy and didn't run into any issues till I tried to set up my brand new external segate hard-drive to it's USB 3.0 port. This hard-drive connects to every other USB 3.0 device I own (laptops and desktops) but would not be detected buy the routers 3.0 port but did on the 2.0 port. I contacted Netgear tech support and after the long wait I was told that my hard-drive was the problem and that that they have a compatibility list that says that my drive will only work on their router. I told them it works on the 2.0 port but not the 3.0 port and their response was ... oh so it works, ok come again... I was like it doesn't work!... so after 5 hours of repeatedly explaining my problem to about 8 of there tech staffs and threatening to return the product if I didn't get some assistance, they transferred me to an american tech. That tech remoted into my computer and after running a series of test concluded that there was something wrong with the router to return it and try another Netgear one. So I did half of his request.
I can't believe it took me 5 hours on the phone to get to someone that actually provided tech support I was sure not going to deal with that again with netgear because even if I exchanged their router for a new one and it worked, if I ran into problems in the future I would have to call again. Oh and FYI the charge for their tech support after I think a year.
I bought an ASUS RT-6800 and though it cost me more the product is looks feels and runs better and I am extremely glad that I had to return the netgear or I would have never bought the asus.
This product has... Fast connection, Reliable connection, difficult to setup, doesn't support all plug and play usb devices, difficult to expand, bad ui, bad tech support

What's great about it: It works!
What's not so great: Price
Sure it was a bit pricie but once you start using it you forget its cost.
Prior to buying this router I bought a $160 Netgear R6300 AC1700 and had an awful experience with it. After 2 days of trying to set it up and 5 hours of there over seas customer support trying to tell me I was doing it wrong till finally transferring me to an american tech who agreed that it was their product, I returned it. I didn't want to spend an extra $60 for this product but the prior reviews were great and and it didn't make sense to me to get the next product down only to save $20.
What I wanted from a router:
1- Ability to stream HD movies from my network.
2- Ability to connect a USB 3.0 external drive and turn it into a NAS.
3- Allow for more device to be online at once with out lag issues.
What I got in addition to what I wanted and didn't even know that I wanted:
1- Ability to access my NAS over the internet and FTP.
2- Smart request prioritizing so I can download and surf with out experiencing any lag what so ever.
3- The router can be told to download content for you and store it on the nas. and you can do this from anywhere and any device so you don't need to leave computers on in the house.
4- The router can automatically create backups for your computers on the network .
This product has... Fast connection, Dual band, Reliable connection, great

Protecting a Desktop PC

I am confused by the answer to a prior question which I copied below. I need to surge protect a desktop PC plus external drives, router etc., but also if there is a power outage I need enough battery backup to allow me to save files on my desktop PC and/or external drive and then close everything down. Will it do that ok? Isn't that what its for?

"For your reference, the BN4001 is positioned as a UPS to protect networking equipment, not to be network manageable.

Because it is intended to protect networking equipment (ie modem, router, etc. vs a PC), we do not include a cable to connect to a PC or the software to monitor from a PC"
Yes that is what its for... It keeps your devices on long enough so that files can be saved and that they can be properly shutdown. Based on the battery back up you get and the amount of devices connected that amount of time differs, typically the more money you spend the more time you will have.
