Season 4 brought some surprising changes to the Biggs' household as Molly (Melissa McCarthy) made a monumental decision regarding her teaching career and entertained the notion of becoming a writer. In order to research the crime novel she's planning, Molly goes on a ride-along in Carl (Reno Wilson) and Mike's patrol car, and she also visits Victoria's workplace at the funeral home. Then, in a meeting with her literary hero, J.C. Small (Susan Sarandon), Molly gets some cynical advice from the famous novelist. Later in the season, Small turns up again when Carl and Mike (Billy Gardell) book her for driving under the influence. As for Mike, he too had some momentous incidents in his life as he took a bullet during a robbery, which led him to contemplate his mortality and choice of profession. Later, he, Carl and Samuel (Nyambi Nyambi) undertake a road trip to Memphis, where they hope to meet Carl's long-estranged mother. In the Season 4 finale, Molly is ecstatic to be accepted into a prestigious writer's workshop, but Mike isn't thrilled about having his wife gone for eight weeks in the summer.

Both struggling with weight problems and romance, Mike (Billy Gardell) and (Melissa McCarthy) find each other at an Overeaters Anonymous meeting, much to the delight of Molly's matchmaking family. The fifth season finds the now-married couple dealing with Molly's writer's block as she attempts to write her first novel.
