This thing is indispensable. You need one if you want to use your computer. it gets your usb's out where you can reach them.

the 4 ports usb works without the power plugged in. so what is the power for ???

Is the 110 power for charging up items ??? the usb ports work even when not plugged into 110 adapter.
USB's have four or five pins inside that match up. some pins pass power and some pins pass data. without it plugged in it will pass data only. Conversely you can plug it in to the wall only and charge your microusb devices without passing data with the right cord. With both connected you can download pictures off your phone, for example and charge it at the same time.
