Black & White Viewing Only?

I have a nonHD TV still, and just installed this DVD player using the red/white/yellow cable connection. The player seems to work fine--I tested it with a DVD movie--but it's only in Black & White, and I can't find any option to change that in any of the features (set up, etc.). My TV is fine, with a color display.
Do I need to buy instead a DVD player that does NOT have HD upconversion??
