The My Passport line is an industry leader for a reason. It's pre-formatted NTFS, so it's ready to go out of the box (with an exception, see below). It comes with utility software, but you really don't need it. And from past experience, WD drives have a long lifespan. Obviously, any disk can fail unexpectedly, but this is priced low enough, you can buy multiples and have backups of your backups.
Regarding NTFS: if you're a Mac user (like I am), the disk is going to be read-only. Just use Disk Utility to reformat it FAT32 (for compatibility) or OSX Journaled (if you're only going to use it with Macs).

Use as a storage device for TV?

Can I leave this plugged in to my tv (while connected to Wifi) send data like movies from my laptop to this Hd drive?
The Passport disk itself has no network capabilities, so you won't be able to send files to it wirelessly unless your TV somehow supports that.
