This replaced my Lenovo Thinkpad.
After a bit of a frustrating learning curve regarding Windows 8.1, this Toshiba with the Intel I7 processor really flies.. The sound is much improved over the Lenovo as well.
Once I got past the aggravating Win 8 setup, I have it working much like Win 7, and I don't really use the touch screen at all.
Overall, I like the laptop very much and would buy again.
I would recommend this to a friend!

Is the fan noisy and/or does it kick in often?

I bought the i5 750 GB hard drive version of this laptop but I returned it because the fan was really annoyingly loud and kicked in almost every 10 minutes (just from web browsing, nothing intensive). The fan was better with power saving battery mode, but still very loud whenever it did kick in. Is this laptop the same or did I just get stuck with a dud? I really liked everything else about it except the fan.
Nope. Hardly ever notice my fan at all, and even when it does increase speed it makes very little noise.
I especially like that the intake and exhaust are on the back edge, away from the user.
Also, the keypad area stays very cool, even after being on all day.

when shutting down computer, moniter goes into sleep mode.

our previous monitors would shut down. this monitor has to shut down manually. is there a setting to shut it down automatically.
If you turn the monitor OFF, it will not power up when you turn the PC on again.
There's really no reason to turn it "off" anyway.
Sleep mode is basically off, it just means it will turn back on when you boot the PC.
