This was a pretty solid router for me when I first bought it. I've had it about a year now and just switched internet providers. After unfairly blaming my provider, I figured out that my router has crapped out on me and is not finding ip addresses properly, therefore, it won't work. This happened about a month after my warranty expired (I'm sure that is only a coincidence......) This is the second netgear router that has took a dump on me. I'm done with netgear.
No, I would not recommend this to a friend.

Do you need a modem besides a WiFi router?
If i'm understanding you correctly, yes, you need a modem of some sort. You'll plug into your router afterwards.
