How long does the battery last once the power goes out?

That depends on what equipment you have plugged into it. If you go to the AAPC website, look up your model, it will tell you on average how long your battery will last based on what you have plugged in.

Do I need an UPS?

I have a flat panel tv and soundbar plugged into an outlet that, when the air conditioner turns on, I get a momentary blip on the screen. Will a ups prevent this or what do I need?
A battery backup surge protector will prevent this from happening. You should also get your air conditioning wiring or circuit breaker checked. You should not get a power surge when your air-conditioning unit turns on.

audible alarm

can the audible alarm be silenced ?
No it can't not do you want it to be silenced. That is the only way you will know that the battery back up no longer can be charged it needs to be replaced. It's the only way you know you will have a working battery back up.
