Now I've bought three of these -- 2 Roku 3s and a Roku LT. The Roku 3 are great for Netflix and HBO Go as well as my video collections. The interface is straightforward and clear.

Will this work if you don't subscribe to cable TV?

I purchased an LED (1080 by LG) for my mom but she doesn't subscribe to cable TV and I can't figure out how to get her local channels to come through on this new TV. Do I need to purchase an HDMI cable AND this box? Will having both of them fix the problem?!
What you need is a digital antenna, available for $20+ (I would get a cheap one). The Roku box would work for Hulu and Netflix, but only if you have internet connections and subscribe to those services. You can also use the Roku with a Plex server to play videos on your machine (no internet required but you do have to connect to the PC via Wifi or Ethernet).
