I'm only beginning to understand all of this tablet's capabilities, but it has already improved my artwork 100%. It takes a while to figure out how to get it working optimally in Photoshop, still not all the way there, but I recommend it to anyone still using a mouse.
I would recommend this to a friend!

My son is 11 and wants this tablet to create 3D characters, comics, etc.... Which tablet would you recommend? Do you think the small is too small for this? Also- I'm not too tech savvy- is this something he can link to an iPad? Or it has to be a PC/lap?

I bought a small tablet and it's sufficient to travel from the upper left corner of my screen to the lower right. I don't think the medium size is necessary, especially if space is limited. I'd recommend the the Intuos Pro Small to anyone wanting to advance in photography or digital arts of any kind.

According to the Wacom website, it is compatible with the IPad but it looks like you may need to buy a stylus separate from the one the Intuos Pro ships with.

Do you have to have a pc to use this tablet? My daughter wants this for Christmas and I'm confused about how it actually works. Is it a tablet that works as an art pad or do you need to connect it to a laptop to fully use it?

Yes. It is not a stand-alone product. Think of it as a replacement for a mouse. It's useful because it's much easier to draw smooth lines with a tablet than with a mouse, and also because it adds features that no mouse has. By varying the hardness with which you press on the tablet, you can go from a very fine line to a bolder one without having to stop to make adjustments. You can also use the pressure you apply to the tablet to adjust how transparent what you draw or paint will be.
