What's great about it: Worked w/Netgear's ReadyShare out of the box
What's not so great: Bulky compared to portables. Power adapter is huge. A bit noisy.
The pros: I wanted this unit to plug into my router's USB port and back-up all my computers to it through the router's "ReadyShare" function. Neither Netgear or WD could confirm it would work. It did work with ReadyShare w/ zero issues so far. I didn't have to do anything but plug it in and tell the router it was there. Foolproof. I didn't use the MyBook's software because I don't like Acronis. But the three programs I tried saw the network disk w/o issues. I have the 2T one.
Transfer speeds aren't great, but faster than USB 2.0. The drive does produce a "chugging along" noise as it chomps your data. Is not loud at all, but if your office is quiet you'll wonder if you got a pigeon perching on your window until you get used to it.
Sadly, I bricked mine when it fell from a little stool where I had "protected" it from being on the floor. But it's replacement is still working well.

What's great about it: Plugs are tight but not impossible to remove
What's not so great: Plugs don't rotate
Some of these surge protectors have rotating plugs. That would help when you have many power bulky adapters to plug in, but I like the cable in this unit: thick gauge but pliable. So far, no power spikes frying the electronics.

Does it backup both system software and data, or just data?

Does it back up the whole thing or just the data?

Dave
The software is a watered-down version of Acronis True Image, so you should be able to image your whole HDD, WIndows system partition and everything. I've heard the version is not as good as full blown Acronis. If you install it, you can get Full version of Acronis for the price of an upgrade (~$20 per computer, I think). If you go to the Acronis site, the chat people can answer all your questions. They pursue new customers very aggressively.
I would never install Acronis because is permanent: google how to uninstall Acronis: is a three page procedure involving manually changing registry keys. Acronis is like a nuclear power plant in your back yard: when it works, is almost magically good. But if something goes wrong...you'll need very serious help.
That said, every local IT little store I asked suggested it for backup software. Still, I don't like invasive software. I would never use it.

Can you use this as an additional hard drive to store music?

Could this be used to not only store music files on, but also to use as the primary drive for an itunes set up so that it does not store the music on your in computer hard drive?
I copied some movies to it and watched bits from it fine so music should be totally fine speed-wise. I was using USB 3.0.
I don't think i-tunes would have an issue but it is finicky software.

Does it come with a USB3 cable?

Yes. USB 3.0 cable and power supply cable w/brick adapter. No other cables needed.
