I only use Western Digital hard drives. There are 6 in my PC and two in the toaster.

i liked my old thermaltake toaster. it can only accommodate 1 drive at 1 TB. Moved that one to the pc upstairs. now my PC has 8 and a half TB of storage with room to grow.

Is this drive supposed to be fully compatible with a Gigabyte- X58A-UD3R motherboard? I've been having issues.

Yes. Your Motherboard will support up to six of them. Perhaps it is the HD but, i would bet it is the motherboard.

Would this be compatible with the Inspiron 15, 3521? Would it be better to go with a larger drive and with 7200 RPM?

it will work. whether or not you need a bigger, faster drive depends on what you plan on using it for. intensive apps will run better with a bigger faster drive but if your laptop is for normal use (email, web video, etc.) this should work just fine.
