It's a nice little portable drive that works right out of the box, no assembly required. No downloads required.

Can I use this as a working external hardrive?

I am a CPA and have multiple companies QuickBooks Enterprise files saved in a Dropbox Folder which I work off of. I want to transfer my "working" copies of QuickBooks Enterprise to WD Passport and back up to DropBox but don't know if the WD works as an extended hard drive that I can work off of and it is saved in real time rather than having to start a back up process after I am finished with each company file. Please let me know.
You can work off an external drive the same as you can an internal one. The problem will arise when your program goes looking for a drive it is configured to work with that is not connected at the moment. Although you could, I would advise not loading programs to the external drive, rather using it for data storage only.

Is it compatible with Chromebook OS?

My best guess is this drive will work on any device that performs as a USB Host. If your device will access a Thumb-Drive, it will probably access this disk.
