First and foremost, I should mention that this bag fixes the one thing I could not stand about my old bag: a flimsy strap that constantly fell off unless picked up in the exact right way. This bag's strap is sturdy and stays on securely even if I yank the bag off the floor.
Other than the strap, this bag is great. The quality is nice--it is professional enough to take to the office, to client meeting, to court, etc. The leather could be softer, but I am not sure if that is because I have not yet broken it in or if it's just a little thin. Padding is more than adequate. My main laptop/tablet is a surface pro 4. This bag comfortably fits the Surface Pro 4 in the main sleeve, and I can also throw in a Surface 3 in another pocket. I also keep a solar panel, my charger brick, a number of pens, an external CD drive, a wifi hotspot, a usb hub, a display adapter, a mouse, and a few other miscellaneous items in the bag. In addition to the electronics, I keep a number of paper files, and an umbrella in the bag. I sometimes also pack my mirrorless camera along with a 18-55mm zoom lens or a 35mm prime lens. Everything fits comfortably and safely.
I am very happy with this purchase.

I give this drive all of my stars. Here is why:
1) It is cheap--about $20 cheaper than the next available option and about half the price of a Blu-ray equivalent.
2) It expands my optical drive-less machine(s)--nowadays unless you are buying a desktop, chances are whatever you are buying does not come with a built-in optical drive. My Surface Pro 4 is optical drive-less (as have been my last 3 "laptops").
3) It works--no problems whatsoever. Have not tried burning/writing anything (maybe I have . . . not sure). Either way, it has worked every time I have used it.
4) That legacy software isn't going to install itself--nope, it sure isn't.
5) Slim and lightweight--perfect laptop bag companion. I forget it's there until I need it (and frantically look for it until I remember I put it in the only place it makes sense to put something like this . . . .)

Performs well. I'm able to download from the web while simultaneously transferring large files between my virtual drives. I haven't had to restart it since I installed it; whereas I would have restarted my old router many many times by now. I'm pleased.

What's great about it: It's thin, and typing feels very comforatble and natural on this cover. The backlighting is also amazing.
What's not so great: Every once in a while, the cover resets itself and forgets my custom trackpad settings.
I love everything about this cover other than this random resetting bug that keeps happening. It's nothing severe and can easily be remedied by simply detaching the cover from the surface and re-clicking it in (rebooting windows works, too, but that's more disruptive and not necessary). The bug doesn't affect the settings in the operating system as, when I look those up, they are properly listed as what I personally configured. It's just that, for some reason, the cover, at some point, decides to ignore my custom settings and revert back to default. That gets a little annoying.
I would recommend this to a friend!

what type of cable is used to connect to a microsoft surface pro III
USB. It comes with one. I am using on Surface Pro 4.

Can I safely remove the Cyberlink Media software that was installed along with DVD drive?
Yes. For basic everyday use, you only need the drivers (which may be PnP anyway).

Backlit Effects?
Does the type cover backlit feature affect the surface's performance in any way?
Performance is not noticeably affected, if at all. That system must be using LEDs, and LEDs consume little power. Additionally, the backlighting has three levels of dimming, so you can turn it down, or off, if you wish.
