I'm a design professional and I use my Wacom tablet as my everyday mouse because it relieves carpal tunnel syndrome compared to any other type of mouse. This medium size Wacom is perfect for my daily tasks which I conduct on my 15" MacBook Pro. The stylus and nib holder is one of my favorite parts about the set up. I don't have to worry about it rolling off my desk or losing it. If you're looking for something to travel with then I recommend the small size. Medium is great for your desk set up. The stylus precision and pressure is spot on.

Is this tablet compatible with the Creative Suites applications? Adobe Illustrator, Photoshop, In Design. if I own that software?

Yes, the tablet acts as a mouse so it will work with any software. You can set up the tablet controls however you wish with the Wacom software. So if you want the stylus button to pan then you can set it that way.

is the writing surface a matte or glossy surface?

The writing surface is hard and glossy. It's smooth to work on with the Stylus. The rest of the tablet is matte. I like the contrast.
