This router has an amazing reach with great signal strength. What used to need an ac router with repeaters is now done with just this piece, and equally as well.
I would recommend this to a friend!

 Logitech - Harmony 650 8-Device Universal Remote - Silver
Logitech - Harmony 650 8-Device Universal Remote - Silver
Control up to 8 devices using this Logitech Harmony 650 915-000159 universal remote that is compatible with more than 225,000 devices across more than 5,000 brands for wide-ranging use. One-touch activity buttons simplify option selection.

Are there buttons for everything common?

I was looking at it carefullly in the local B.B. and I couldn't see buttons for thing like: Return (back), Recall (previous channel) CC or the vrious 8 devices. The Sony 8-Device unit has these at less than half the price. What gives?
Depending on the remote whose comands you are emulating, you may not have a need for both a recall and a return. However, that particular button is there. It's the return arrow. And if you need a button for a particular activity, you can add a custom button to appear on the screen above.

How many activities can you program?

As many as you like, as long as you only use 8 devices.

Does it know what devices are already on?

Does this remote remember what devices are already on? For example, if I am watching TV and I decide to play my Xbox One (and hit the Xbox or Gaming Programmed Activity) does it realize the TV is already on and just change the input or will it run the command to turn the TV on, which turns the TV off?
It remembers what the device settings are for the current activity.

Example: Current activity is watch tv. Your TV is on, the cable box is on, the av receiver is on.

When you select the "play xbox" activity, it will (if programmed appropriately) change the tv input to the right input, turn off the cable box, switch inputs on the av reciever and turn on the xbox.

When you select off, it will then turn the tv off, the reciever off and the xbox...but it will know that the cable box is already off and not toggle the power
